I can't believe this entire film did'nt get more love from the acadmey.A great actor like Djimon H who deserves an Oscar, I don't think he was even nominated for blood diamond

He did get a supporting actor nomination for Blood Diamond but lost to Alan Arkin for "Little Miss Sunshine" of all things. I really think he deserved a win for this and Blood Diamond. The man is an amazing actor.

this film is excellent. i found this movie to be so sad, but moving. yes Djmon Honsou does deserve and oscar he is one of the best actors in hollywood and the film definetly should get more love and be a must see. Matthew Mcoughnahey also did a wonderful job too. i love this movie it brings out the true history of the world and the fight to stand up for what you see as wrong!

Agreed! The score is also brilliant. I watched it for the first time in grade 8 when is was on t.v. I recorded it on VHS.The History teachers were always asking me to bring my copy to school for class. Now , luckily, I managed to get it on DVD. It's one of my favourite Spielberg movies..along with 'Catch me if you can' and 'Empire of the Sun'

Not buying that. Matt Damon was nominated that same year for Good Will Hunting and Damon was not even a blip on anyone's radar before that movie. Although, back in 1988, the academy liked rewarding established actors as opposed to more recently where they like giving awards to indies and unknowns. So even if he were nominated, he probably didn't have a snowball's chance back in 1988.
I suppose his role would be Lead Actor. Looking at the five nominated best actors for 1988, I've only seen one of the films so I can't judge for myself. Personally, I thought he was great. -

since i first saw this movie over a decade ago, i have anxiously awaited more roles from Djimon Hounsou..
he was amazing in Amistad..
he had a small role in Gladiator (2000) and two significant supporting roles in 2002 in which he was wonderful, The Four Feathers and In America (he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for In America, but lost to Tim Robbins for Mystic River)
i also thought he was fantastic in Blood Diamond..
and although i didn't care for the movies, i appreciated him in the second Tomb Raider movie and Push
the man is definitely talented..
