This was one of the best films I saw in the 1990s and I can't understand why it's not rated higher. 7.2 is good, but should be 7.5-8.0. Powerful story. I like what Spielberg did here. One of my favorites of his.

I haven't seen it since it first appeared in theaters and I remember it as a rather slow and at times tedious movie. probably because it wasn't what I had expected at the time.
Now however after a recent viewing, I appreciate it ever so much more. It is vastly underrated with the only jarring element the use of certain types of music when JQA comes into the picture. That small point aside it was extremely engrossing and well acted. The portrayal of John C. Calhoun was a small role but masterfully done to show what a vile and loathsome person and politician he was. My skin crawled when he had his scene during the dinner with president Van Buren.
