How in the world did they get Christopher Lee to do this? I know he's good at playing villains, but in THIS MOVIE!!

I like it! I think there's some really funny stuff in it. Dumb? Yes! It's for kids though. If you've never seen the kids books this movie is based on, you might not really appreciate it. I loved those books when I was young.

It's a unique kind of humor and a unique kind of movie. I think the last act was poorly done, but the gags in the middle of the movie are pretty good. The ironies that happen, I love.
I'm a comedy writer myself, and the screenplay was brilliant at times. There were some flaws in the first and last act I think, but some of the gags really were wonderfully written! -

Years ago I peeked in theater where it was playing. It was so bad I wouldn't even sneak in to see it for free. Just finishing watching it on cable now. I remember laughing once (at something the mother did), and the bit with Lloyd was mildly amusing, but otherwise I don't think it's physically possible to get drunk enough to make this movie funny.
BUT, if you liked this movie I'll recommend "Mom and Dad Save the World" featuring John Lovitz and Terri Garr. If you hated this movie I'll recommend "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, and Bette Midler. MaDStW has a similar style but isn't quite so stupid, and both of these movies have much better humor. -

I grew up with the books and saw the movie when I was younger. I recently watched it again and it's still hilarious even though I'm 20. I don't need drugs or alcohol to enjoy this. It's wholesome silliness, and it's a different direction than say, Apatow or the Farrelly brothers. No real sex or cursing. No semen. No Will Ferrell's ass. It's just people dressed like idiots behaving like idiots while the rest of the world watches. That's the joy of it.
My personal favorite scene:
While trying to put out a warehouse fire, Mrs. Stupid finds a fire extinguisher. Right next to it, she finds a larger fire extinguisher, and so on down the line until she finds a massive flamethrower, which she then uses in an attempt to put out the flames.
Why is a flamethrower placed next to various-sized fire extinguishers? God only knows. But it's hilarious.
