The best blockbuster from 1996?

Anyone else agree? It actually has some fine acting(Connery coming back to do the action hero stuff and any film with him is always worth watching), Nicholas Cage(when he could act and not do his "Weirdo" impression) and Ed Harris. Decent effects(from ILM - before they went all CGI heavy), the car chase with though San Francisco, green smoke, injecting yourself in the heart, etc.
It's competition that year :-
Independence Day - Yes, I do actually like this. Sure - it's cheesey in places, but it knows how to poke fun a the sci-fi genre. It's good fun - but doesn't have all the elements of The Rock.
Mission Impossible - Well, the plot probably doesn't hold up to much, once you have gone through it afterwards. Great set pieces(the stealing the data from Langley and the stuff on the TGV). It's the best of the series. Whilst a great cast - they aren't as well used as the Connery, Cage and Harris in The Rock.
Twister - was a letdown, after the success of Speed. I was expecting more from Jan de Bont.
Broken Arrow - that got far too silly and far fetched. -

I prefer Twister to Independence Day. I actually liked the nerdy storm chasers, though most considered the film FX and nothing else.
My running order:- The Rock
- Mission Impossible
- Twister
- Eraser
- Independence Day
Broken Arrow felt too long before the others to count as a summer blockbuster. All in all that was a golden year for action. Summer 1997 had more - but worse - blockbusters.

Independence Day - I like it better than The Rock and would be quicker to place this in a favorite movie list than the latter, but that's just me
The others you listed probably aren't as good as The Rock, or at least not as enjoyable. M:I is the second worst of the series. Once Abrams and Cruise took control everything since M:I3 has been progressively awesome. Also add to your list Fargo and Scream. The first was the best made movie of the year and most worthy of the Oscars, etc, and Scream was very original and was both funny and scary. I do like the sequels better, but it managed to spawn a franchise that I, a hater of horror movies, could actually enjoy.
Overall, I'd say The Rock was probably 3rd or 4th best, but not #1 for the year. -
