I haven't seen the film for a while, but this line has always bugged me. One of the bad guys calls Connery's character an 'English pr1ck' while beating him up.
I'm pretty sure they show a computer screen near the beginning of the film, which shows his place of birth to be Glasgow (or is it Edinburgh?), Scotland.
So the correct line should have been Scottish or British pr1ck. I think this belongs in the goofs section.
Also, why would someone as famous as Sean Connery allow this line in the film.

This was intentional. Lets be serious, how many americans would know the difference between a Scottish and an English accent? Same reason the marine had the line "did I tell you my old man was Irish?" Ireland and Scotland/England are completely different countries but the marine probably didn't even know this.

Think the line about his old man being Irish meant that the guy was Catholic Irish and therefore had a problem with the English - the American Irish community have been funding terrorism in Ireland for years.
Have to say that this scene bugged me too and couldn't understand why Sean Connery allowed himself to be called English - no Scotsman I know would ever put up with that. -

I was always expecting Connery to retort after killing the goon "I'm Scottish you pr1ck" But never did. Shame.
My Scottish friend was very disappointed about that to!

He dies.
Mason puts a chain around his neck and the man gets strangled to death.
It doesn't happen until after the two hour mark, though.
Every time I watch the movie I forget about it, hehe.
I always think: "What about that guy?", only to remember as soon mentioned scene comes. -

His heritage wasn't what makes him English in the film anyway. He worked for the English government as a spy making him English. Same way my grandpa was American even though he was born in Norway though he just served in the Navy as an American not a spy.

You could call him Scottish or British or a UK citizen but he's not English.
He also worked for the UK government - England doesn't have it's own government (although Scotland does funnily enough).
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are separate countries that together form the United Kingdom.
Britain on the other hand is the main island that England, Scotland and Wales share.
Therfore technically the people in Northern Ireland are not British but Irish (though I'd be very careful about telling that to the loyalist part of that community).
It's all a bit confusing but that's what happens when you have a history as long, bloody and convoluted as this place has. -

Sorry MovieFan6048, you are very wrong. There is no English government. He works for the British government, and the British SAS. He was born in Scotland as highlighted in the film, so the Marine is wrong to call him English. He is Scottish, or British.
I watched the movie again on Saturday night. At the beginning of the movie Mason's file comes up and the tech guy at the CIA says 'born, Glasgow?', then gives a confused look. Kinda mad me laugh cause he doesn't seem to have a clue where that was!!! It's my hometown as well
But your response highlights the inaccuracy perfectly. It is confusing, but my main point was - why did Connory, a hugely proud Scot (who will be campaigning for independence from the UK next year from his Hollywood manson), allow the line to stand?
Maybe it was deliberate to show the Marine was a bit stupid. Or perhaps Connory and the actor who said it weren't in the same shot together? Or maybe he let it slide because he got to kill the guy moments later anyway!!?
Personally, I think it belongs in the goofs.

It's not a goof, you're basing it all on where he was born. Maybe his character had a Scottish mom and English father and he was born out of wedlock in Glasgow and then moved to England. Since all we know about the character is that he was born in Scotland and later served in the British SAS we can't assume calling him English is wrong. Maybe both his parents were English and working in Glasgow at the time he was born. I've come up with two plausible explanations and since you can't prove either are wrong within the context of the movie it's not a goof. Even though he is campaigning for Scottish independence he has played English before quite famously as James Bond, maybe calling him English was a nod to that.

If your message, and its appalling grammar, is an example of the English education system then I think Scotland would be better to go it alone. I would like my taxes back please because the money spent on your schooling was wasted. ABE!

I for one -as a Yank- happen to like Scotland So please don't include us all in your rant. I do understand that you feel defensive. A thousand plus years ago your country was taken over by a bunch of French pirates. Later they reinforced their pedigree with German princes. With people like that with their boot on your throat I can see why you would Kow-Tow to your betters. And you would have to find someone- anyone you can belittle. If Scotland wanted to become a 51st state, that would be cool.
