At the beginning gave it away for me. I imagine back when the movie came out and Kevin Spacey was lesser known there was no way anyone would be recognizing his voice in the opening scenes, however after seeing so many of Spacey's shows and movies it was plain as day his voice.
Now not knowing the exact plot significance of this, the movie was still very enjoyable to me. However, it was pretty clear 'Verbal' would be someone other than expected if his face is not shown and is killing a main character in the flashback.
Still, fantastic performance by Spacey throughout.

        They didn't. It's clearly Spacey.

One question throughout the movie is whether or nor Dean Keaton is dead, meaning they don't have his dead body, and we don't know if Keaton's dead during any of Verbal's story.
