I thought the scene with the whiny customer who couldn't get her ring to fit was hilarious a rare moment of humor (dark though it was) in a film without much levity. If Jack hadn't been such a great actor, he could have found his calling as a jeweler.

I think that was Penn's homage to legendary 'Chicken Salad Sandwich'-scene in Five Easy Pieces, where Nicholson gets fed up to stiff waitress.
