I never understood why Stone(ginger) was so bad to Deniro( Rothstein) In the marriage and throughout the film. Watching the film several times and seeing how badly she treated him and how much he put up with it I could not comprehend. I've seen throughout my life many relationships like those sometimes a bit better but mostly a lot worst. To the point that that type of relationship is what I considered normal and everything else bad.
But I could never understand the dynamics of their relationship throughout the movie having watched it a million times. Till now, much more mature and seeing the beginning where I never noticed I can see where it all began and why it was a bad relationship and why it was heading there and worst.
You have to credit Ginger. She was very straightfully honest with Rothstein and told him when he prosposed that She didnt love him and that she didnt have the same feelings for him. That she wasnt that type of girl. So Rothstein take was that he thought he can buy love from her because he couldnt get over how beautiful and dazzling she was though she was clearly not the wife type. After she openly and straightfully told him she didnt feel the same way in a brutal straightforward way. There was no changing that and all that could come of it was trouble. Even when the marriage was at its worst which I dont know what point you can say it was at its worst because it was all at an all-time high terrible at different times. He always seemed to take it all and still somehow wanted her to turn and be his ideal wife. Which also didnt make sense since he knew her history and background. With him being so successful and so many women around why did he remain loyal to her and not find someone else?
I dont see her having anything else that many women in that environment dont have. His true love was pain, shame, and lust. He was never able to love her because from the beginning his reasoning was to buy her off since she could not love him and that could never end well.
The roof of it all was that he wanted to buy off love. Ginger always saw him as a money machine and not as a man stemmed from his very own decision to comply and accept her for being that way.
Additionally, I'd like to add the funnily thoughts on different matters. First of all I'm sure though perfectly acted Deniro was missed casted. His too good looking and could get any woman he wants. He could get many more girls like ginger and wouldnt even remember her. Im sure the real person is supposed to be unattractive and had that complex so he had to overcompensate by getting a beautiful girl like ginger if only through buying her off. Sharon Stone though before looked incredible when I used to watch these films in vhs. Now on the hd and better tvs she looks aged. Meaning he couldve gotten younger women so no need to go after an old ginger. Also Deniro as Max Cady wouldve stemmed rolled Pesci. I just dont see Pesci beating up Deniro that is another reason its miscasted. Deniro is better looking than stone and bigger than pesci. Though one of deniros best he doesnt seem like the guy who would be begging for stone or being intimadated by pesci.
Proof of the feminism in society. Ginger goes to the houses crashes the car, disturbs the public, destroys the house, robs, is totally coked and drunk yet the cops let her do whatever she wants and nothing happens. In other societies they'd beat her up and lock her up.
I rate this in Scorsase top 3 if you rate it no.1 You wont get an argument from me. Way better than Casino and even Deniro and Pesci as well is better in this. Totally remarkable film. Probably Sharon Stones best. I think she shouldve easily won the oscar for that hard role. She basically steals the film from such a superb cast. This film shouldve won best director and picture from all the gangster films Scorssese did. If not at the very least consideration for this titantic effort. A+
