was anyone else suspicious about him before the truth about him was revealed? I remember thinking it was odd that he didn't reveal much about himself like the others did. I was pretty upset when he got caught though

Well yeah because they make it pretty clear that he is a lot sharper than he is putting on. When they write about why they joined the army all he said was he wanted to learn a new trade and the fact that he is Hamlet in class and he breaks down the fact that Hamlet is just "playing the fool."
It's truly unfortunate what happened to him but at the end of the day he did lie and he did break the law.
