The big flaw of the film is in the first scene

I liked this overall, but I despise all the time spent on Goodwin. Who cares what kind of car he wants to buy?
The film has two "heroes" Stempel and van Doren who, if not exactly heroic, are meant to be sympathetic. That is enough. We don't need another main character.
Goodwin should have been a minor character who asked questions, or even left out altogether. For narrative structure, the two quiz show leads would have been fine. All the court stuff was really clunky anyway.
I also think Morrow didn't handle the role very wellhis fake accent really grated on me. -

I understand not liking the actor. I think he was miscast, but the scene introduces us to the character. He is a key character. I like the car dealership. It shows us a luxury item of the 50s. After the war, Americans wanted to forget all the sacrifice and spend their money on all of the comforts. That opening scene shows us that even though Goodwin was interested, he knew he couldn't really afford the car. It will have to wait. As the movie progresses, we see that others don't want to wait. They see an easy way of getting what they want.
As for the "court stuff", It may have been "clunky", but it happened, and it helped to explain just how this case played out.

Just watched it again last night.
Anyone have anything else to say about what the OP thought of the first scene? The movie it's self?
