Wondering if anyone has had the same experience here?
This movie had a profoundly saddening effect on me back in 1994. In the last scene when those guitar strings kick in and the camera zooms out - the sadness strikes so deep, its gut wrenching. You can't help but carry it with you forever.
And I'm thinking - what was the point of creating a tale so tragic??
Now I have teenage kids..and I feel I shouldn't show them this movie on the basis that its just too damned SAD!?
Am I overreacting? -

I Agree. The guitar music really elevates, the feeling of sadness in this scene, exactly the way you describe it. The ending is sad for sure, and the story is tragic. From the moment we meet her, this little girl is drowning in loneliness and trapped in a world of Despair. For me though, I wouldn't say that the ending is depressing, because we are left with a sense of Hope, that Mathilda has finally found her way.

Throw-away comment. You could choose to NOT read the thread if you hadn't seen the movie yet, but if you haven't yet seen the movie why are you reading threads on the discussion board?
And quit being so vulgar.
