I don't really see how you arrived to that conclusion. The movie never didn't show how Lestat and Luis explained to the public about Claudia.
I guessed that they were pretending to be siblings in public. In private, Lestat treated Claudia as his pet and Luis treated Claudia like she was a member of his family.
I don't think your question was ever explained in the novel.
