    Best Picture.
    Best Director - Taylor Hackford.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Tony Gilroy.
    Best Actress - Kathy Bates.
Best Supporting Actress - Judy Parfitt.
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Best Supporting Actor - David Strathairn.
Best Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer.
    Best Cinematography.
    Best Make-up.
10 all together, a lot I know, but I would argue that this film deserved every one of these nominations. I would go so far as to say, Kathy Bates deserved her 2nd Oscar for this film, and Judy Parfitt should have won hands down!!

I agree this was an amazing movie. Not sure how it wasn't at least nominated for Best Picture, Actress, and Supporting Actress.

I totally agree in all categories. Splendidly cast, acted and directed. This is possibly the best King adaptation made, although Cronenberg's 'Dead Zone' is a close runner-up.

I know it seems a lot, but it definitively should have been nominated at least for best picture, best actress and supporting actrees for both Jennifer and Judy Parffit..
This is an amazing movie, always in my top ten, how or why was / is this underrated I'll never understand

IMO, it's the BIGGEST Oscar snub in history should have AT LEAST got nominations for all the categories the OP mentioned.

Parfitt was all-time worthy. If i could give the film ONE oscar, it would be her. But Actress and both your Supporting Actor noms, as well as cinematography and adapted screenplay would have been fine with me.

Just saw this film for the first time todayI'm amazed Kathy Bates didn't get best actress, who won that year? Because they'd have to have made the earth stand still to upstage the performance Kathy Bates did.

Bates should have won Best Actress in a landslide victory - one of the best lead actress performances in cinematic history.

                            In fact it's 1996 oscars, not 1995 ! 😉
I always wondered why the movie did not receive prizes at that event, truly, at least, Kathy Bates deserved oscar for best performance in a lead role !
The ''Saturn Award'' nominations they received should have been at the golden globes not the Saturn ridiculous !

Agree with most of your list OP. Bates and Parfitt were superb. I'm also glad to see Strathairn getting some respect here, as he took a one-note role in the novel and gave us a multi-dimensional character - abusive, mean, but also pathetic (sometimes almost comically so). His performance in that cringe-inducing flashback on the ferry was very brave (and he has said the scene was very hard to do. Ellen Muth as the young Selena is brave in this scene too, but the focus is more on Joe.). And who can forget the look on his face when Dolores confronts him right before the eclipse?
I'm not so keen on Leigh - she's a very mannered actress and tends to talk like she has marbles in her mouth (much like Mary Louise Parker). But she does hit the right notes in some scenes, particularly with Bates. Plummer's role is one he can do easily and was not, I think, a big challenge.

Judy Parfitt was a revelation, hands down one of the best performances I have ever seen. I watched this last night, had not seen it since it's original release, and it has gotten better with age. She and Bates were both extremely deserving of nominations.
I watched it last night with two friends who had neither read the book nor seen the film before and they loved it.

I agree, this movie is great. Excellent ensemble. Perhaps the reason it was not box office/oscar successful, was because of its heavy content. Not an oscar favorite kind.

Wow, I thought the stand out performance in this film was Strathairn. Never saw this type of performance in him and he is always solid. Bates was also great as was Parfitt.
Leigh was truly bad in some scenes and goods in others. She has a tendency to overreach at times in this film and other.
Plummer was not good in this and I felt miscast.
The best scenes to me were the ones between Strathairn or Parfitt and Bates.
