……all created by her own willful bitchery.
Vera was a privileged woman who took a payback on her husband
by colluding with the hunky to murder him, leaving her all his money.
Ironic she gave Dolores the same advise, yet Dolores was operating from a completely different dynamic. For her penance, Dolores in a sense got to put up with Vera's night terrors, but she bore no guilt conscience about her own actions and rightly so.
What Dolores did, could objectively be considered ethically questionable, but due to her reasoning, she deserved absolution. The law in this case was just a hinderance which she managed to skirt around, due to her intelligence and desperate need to survive.
Who would ever want to be in Dolores's shoes? That said, she was also a darkly inspiring creature.

Stephen King doesn't let people get off scott free
Vera suffered for her crime even if she wasn't locked behind bars

They filmed a scene like in the novel,
where Joe manages to climb out and Dolores konks him on the head with a rock.
Hackford the director said it made the sequence too long though. I also feel it made it look more accidental for the movie too.

Oh! I didn't know that
King wanted Joe to really have his karma served up to him

Agreed! That cringe scene on the ferry… that would have been uncomfortable for an actor I would think

Oh yes, I think she probably did
She was well cast. Sometimes with child actors, they shield them from the harsher aspects. This girl was a teen though.

Yes, when they're little they should shield them
They also might use actors who look younger than their years too

Looked her up. The actress had just turned 14 when the film was shot. Jodie Foster was 13 I think, when she starred in
Taxi Driver
. Dolores was shot in Nova Scotia, doubling for Maine.
