I absolutely love how Eddie Murphy throws this film under the bus

If you watch interviews with him before this film came out, he's in love with it. He claims it gets back to the roots of the character. The movie is generally reviled (I loved it) and he decides to jump ship his opinion. Bruce Willis did the same damn thing with Die Hard 4. He claimed that he didn't like the previous two and that the 4th one got back to the "roots" of the character. Apparently whenever an actor says "roots" we're supposed to expect something as exciting as the first one. Unfortunately, Die Hard 4 was widely liked (it's the worst die hard to me). So he'll never have to retract that stupid statement considering how neutered that film was. Beverly Hills Cop III is a much better film than Die Hard 4. I just hate when actors pull this crap. Eddie's already doing the "roots" routine with Beverly Hills Cop 4. Hope it doesn't suck.

Well I think we can all agree, this movie doesn't get back to the roots of
anything
.
Murphy was most likely just trying to sell the movie. He probably knew it was subpar, but it's his job as star to get out there and sell the movie to the ticket buyers. To do otherwise would put his $15 million payday (at the time) at risk for future movies. But once the movie's declared a failure and proceeds to slip off quietly in the night, Murphy can pull the "I knew it was bad from the beginning" routine.
And Bruce Willis has gone on record as saying the first
Die Hard
was the only good one (this was said before he signed on for DH4). Then all of a sudden, he's out there talking about how DH4 builds on the "mythology" of the character. But since the movie was actually a success, he doesn't have to get defensive and turn on the movie.

Big stars have to speak well of the films they appear in even if they don't care for them. It's a stipulation in their contract.
What they don't have to do is publicly snub the film after the general consensus is that it's a stinker.
They should just stick to their staged convictions. They look better for it.
Will Smith did the same with WILD WILD WEST. He sang of its praises months before release and then retracted his comments once the word was out that it was a clunker. -

Bruce is very good at selling his movies and acting like he's in love with a project, then immediately wiping his ass with it after it's released. During production of Die Hard 4 he repeatedly said Len Wiseman was the best director he ever worked with and that he would never make another Die Hard movie without him. Ha! I'm sure it's partial BS, just part of the job, but these actors probably hope for the best with their movies and you don't really know how they're gonna turn out till they're done. Sometimes I have a brilliant idea for a sculpture and it just turns out looking like ass. It happens.
