The people at the top of the food chain didn't get there because they were good guys that played nice. They got there because they were the most successful bad guy. Prisons and cemeteries are full of unsuccessful bad guys and good guys. If you're going to be that kind of monster, you have to go all in.
It also helps to have a really big posse
