It's mostly due to nostalgia. The film itself is nothing special, but people who grew up watching it have a fondness for it.

I'm sure America's love for baseball plays a big part of it, but it's also such a well made movie. The kids are good, the comedy is funny, and like all good kid's movies, it touches on themes of growing up.
I do agree it certainly wouldn't work with say hockey. Most people, especially in the time the movie is set, just wouldn't have played hockey. You need skates, sticks, a puck, ice, and other equipment.
For a good baseball game, you just need a ball, a bat, and some gloves. Then, any empty lot can double as a field.
So many stories, so little time.

Baseball is the backdrop. The story is more about an awkward kid facing rejection and then being accepted. It's about facing fears and making a name for yourself.
I love how unlike most sports movies at the time, it treats the game agaisnt the more professional rivals as an afterthought. It's more about the friendships.
