    I don't understand why were they waiting in the rain for the bus? He was driving "The Old Daimler", and he could have driven her to her destination! In the close proximity of the car sparks might have flown! LOL!!

      Good question! But perhaps even such a short drive alone together in the car would have been too much intimacy for him.
      After all, just before Steven accompanies her to the bus, when they were sitting on the pier, Miss Kenton has told him that she's often imagined what life with him might have been like (unfortunately the scene was deleted from the film but it's on the DVD and you can find it on youtube), so that must have wreaked havoc with Steven's feelings (in the novel she tells him this while they are waiting for the bus and he confesses to the reader that his heart is breaking - he doesn't tell her, though, of course).

        That is a great question. It was, sadly, another missed opportunity for Stevens.
