Is Dunston married and his past?

In the final fight where Sam kills Dunston in the end, Dunston is clearly wearing a wedding-ring. Is Dunston married or is it a mistake on the directors part? Meaning that Ted Levine might have been married and he wasn't told to take the ring off?
Dunston used to be a cop in the Cleveland Police Department. Was he fired for beating up suspects or worse? Or did he quit because working for scum like Franklin Hale pays better? Or is he simply lying to the sherif about his past?
He says at the end, he wants to go home. Where is home? Cleveland?
