Tin plate tokens around the fishing hut door

Can anyone please tell me what the tin plate tokens are around grandpa gustafsons door. Some are square, some are circular. The best I can figure out is that they are given out every year to owners of the huts as proof of rental, or something similar. Max Goldman has a few too in other scenes. Please help.
