I think it was used to be like that until recently when hyper protectionism kicked in

Agreed. I grew up in the country and if I wasn't in school, I was gone from sunrise to sunset. I'd either eat at a friend's house, or bring one or more home for dinner. I look back at movies like this and Goonies and miss how it used to be.

I lived in the country too and when I was a kid (and not in school) my sisters and I would be gone all day. I have such good memories of being barefoot, in shorts and just being a kid. We would play in the woods, go exploring, make forts, ride our 4 wheelers, play in our barn, go fishing at our pond, annoy our cattle, go visit our grandparents (they lived not far from our house) and so on. We would of course come back to eat but for the most part we were gone and not being supervised. We hardly ever got into trouble either, haha.

I visited a friend in Eugene, Oregon in the summer between 8th and 9th grade and we would leave in the morning and be gone all day and we were both 13. We came back in late afternoon just in time to catch Star Trek.

I cannot relate to the whole leaving and being gone all day because I was one of those kids that basically had no friends. Well from fifth grade up I only had one friend at one time. That whole thing about kids being gone with their friends all the time always fills me with anger because I cannot relate to that.

Hey, guy, I used to feel like you. But, I have come to learn that you don't need friends. Most of them will eventually ditch you or betray you. Living completely alone in an efficiency apartment without even a plant is the way to go, my friend. Trust me.
