You have no idea what logic is.

I don't usually try to be a jerk these threads, but this is by far the dumbest thread I have ever seen on IMDB. So just because you don't like a character, they should be killed off?
Marty was my favorite character on this show. And although I am personally more like Frasier and Niles (I am a psychologist who drinks wines and although I don't care for Opera,I do attend the theater and read much of the same literature) I find Marty the most personable and likable character on the show.
Furthermore if you liked Niles and Frasier, wishing death upon their father is rather heartless of you. They obviously cared about him.
Martin was an essential foil for Niles and Frasier. If we didn't have him on the show, we would simply be seeing Niles and Frasier going to the Opera and drinking wine all the time. You have to have conflict on a sitcom and Martin was essential. If they killed him off, the show would have went off the air. -

Jake (and just about every other sane person around here) is absolutely right.
The character of Martin was instrumental in creating many of the shows biggest laughs yes, even after season 5. Moreover, Mahoney brought a real sense of warmth and no-nonsense uprightness to the show.
Losing him for any reason would've been a disaster.

AH.just figured it out. I just read all 7 pages of your complaints and the replies about Martin.
You have a problem with YOUR father. Martin reminds you or YOUR father. Pity, I guess your dad had an odor you found offensive.
It fits perfectly now why you are being such a curmudgeon about this. You don't like your Daddy. AAWWWW. -

This is a complete revamp of my first post in this thread.
At first Marty was an interesting character in spite of being an ingrate & boorish.
He pissed and moaned about everything and had no room for compromise. I did not like him, but I really respected his Korean service, his duty as a cop, and certainly taking a round in the hip. That's not the normal life for the "me" generation of which they partially were members.
With that said, I had a real hard time getting by his jerk-off personality. He made fun of his boyscontinually. Yeah, they were the garden variety snobbish twits to anything not to their liking. Yet they didnt want to make an attempt to get around Marty being such a jerk. It was easier to just laugh at him and chuckle about his personality and way of life. They wanted him to see it their way and admit that he was wrong. You would think his hot-shot psychiatrist sons could work through that. I know from experience that its not easy to evaluate someone close to you, especially family.
He was embarrassed that his boys had no athleticism. They played racket ball but dont know how successful. He even made a comment to one of his buddies that his sons were shrinks and they didnt know anything.
That is not a father who is proud of his sons.
Howeverhe eventually came around and saw who his sons really were.
But much of that was polished through time and he became rather likable. Just the look on his face when he bought the boys their own burial plots. He was beaming with the satisfaction of doing something important for his sons. They were moderately horrified at the gesture but took it in stride. They slowly gelled and (not completely) came to accept it as is.
I'm glad he endured through the years of Frasier. He was the epitome of a character having personal development. -
