Like many here, I stop the dial and watch this whenever I see it on. Happened again last evening.
I can never get over how much Geena Davis
    looks
like a woman from the 1940s here. Hair, makeup, mannerisms, dress I can name all the elements but still not express it.
She looks like she just climbed off the nose of a B-17. She looks like an actual woman from the 1940s surrounded by a bunch of 1991 actresses who are just playing the part.
That said, I was born in the 1960s. Any one of my older IMDB colleagues who were alive at the time share my impression?

I'm not old enough to answer your question, but I thought Geena D. was superb in her acting, her look, everything loved her in this.

        SO TRUE!
I just 'landed' on this.. this afternoon while dial surfing & my immediate thought was: "i LOVE this movie!"
So of course i watched it!! And (TO ME!) Geena is the
        most
"Authentic" character in this film..& do i believe that her AMAZING 'look' here sure helps!! ..Or perhaps thats just Geena.
This just may be the 'finest' film of hers that i have seen.. I SERIOUSLY DON'T Think there is another role of hers that has 'affected' me so..

Her "Dottie" is great, but Nothing can match "Thelma".

Geena Davis is extremely gorgeous in this movie. I had a huge crush on her then.
