What about the ring?

I'm about halfway through the movie now and, obviously, Gwen (Goldie Hawn) and Newton (Steve Martin) aren't married, but, since others think they are, wouldn't the question, "Where's your wedding ring," be brought up at some point for both of them? I think I saw Gwen wearing a ring on her right hand and a ring on her left hand at one point, but I didn't see Newton wearing any for appearances' sake. Granted their marriage is supposed to be on the rocks. Still, wouldn't his parents have looked for that the first time they see Newton after Gwen told them the big news? Or at least somebody by that point.
