I say take a look at the very beginning. Chaplin is stripping himself of his Tramp persona, in clothing, props and makeup.
It was very evident from the opening scenes that this was not a film about his movies, as Charlie Chaplin, rather Charles Chaplin, the man.
I find this biopic wonderful.

You're right it wasn't a movie about his work but about the man behind the curtain. Anthony Hopkins character was fictional and most of the story came from Chaplin's book but it was never told the way it was told in the film.
Never argue with an idiot people passing by might not be able to tell the difference.
