I thought it was pretty good.

All I can speak to is why I personally hated it…for me it was a poor follow up to the previous two films. And in saying that…I don't mean not enough action…because the original had little action. It lacked suspense…action…and characters that I could relate to. It has sub par special effects and the twist ending was corny. I would have much preferred the three survivors make it to earth…but earth has been in a war with the aliens in the meantime. Kind of like the sequel graphic novels.

What were they going to do with another sequel? How could they have upped the action, emotion, and all the other stuff that Aliens brought to the screen? They wouldn't even try.
So we get a different vibe altogether. Stark, dark, cold and despairing. Personally, I enjoyed it. -

It's not a terrible movie, but what it does to the characters is. Newt and Hicks being dead before the movie proper even starts invalidates everything that happened in Aliens. It's a real kick in the teeth for fans who were invested in the characters.
Not to mention the human Bishop is evil, and Ripley dies. It left a bad taste in people's mouths.
So many stories, so little time. -

Which is why I figure that Rip and the rest make it back to earth.
She and Hicks become a couple and adopt Newt and Bishop gets repaired and is an assistant to them.
A3 and 4 are just dreams and nightmares that Rip has as she did in the beginning of A2.

It’s a decent enough movie on its own, besides some plot holes and interchangeable bald British guys, but it’s a terrible sequel to Aliens

It's one of my favorites. Aliens first, Alien3 is second and then the original Alien.
I think it was supposed to be the end of Ripley's story so they put her in an impossible situation for which she was never gonna survive and there would be a final person. Of course the movie is depressing though because Ripley dies and we don't get to see Newt or Hicks either. -

I pretty much disliked all of it. I hated that they killed off Newt and Hicks. I hated most all of the cast. I still liked Weaver but there was nothing special about this performance. The only thing good about this film is it's not as bad as Resurrection. But a steep decline in every way from Alien and Aliens.
I hated that somehow she had an alien in her body and it took so long for it to gestate. It led to a memorable scene but not one worth all the rest that preceded it. I have heard reasons but none that make sense.
And the director's cut isn't much better at all. In fact, I hated the movie more because of the high expectations heaped on the director's cut that were never realized at all.
In the history of sequels, this one ranks right up there with Jaws the Revenge and Superman IV in terms of disappointment.
