Sir Sean Connery was Jonathan Demme's first choice to play Dr. Hannibal Lecter, but he turned the part down.
    Can you imagine?😄

Could he have done the accent? Connery couldn’t even do Irish for the undeserved Oscar he won for The Untouchables.

Hopkins, didn’t. The point was, could Connery have done any accent at all, except his own?

                        A mid-Atlantic accent with a Lithuanian lilt?
Nobody found issue with Brian Cox or Mads Mikkelsen
Gaspard Ulliel got a bit of a ribbing for his French portrayal I suppose, but only when compared to Anthony Hopkins take
The big question is, could Sean Connery have portrayed him as well as Hopkins?
                        To that I'd say no

Hopkin’s film is pop culture. Cox’s take is a minor cult film.
No, Connery wasn’t the actor that Hopkins is. Not that Connery wasn’t a commanding presence as an actor, he had his limitations. Like I mentioned, he couldn’t even act with an Irish accent. He just played the role as himself in The Untouchables.
In a year with much better support performances, Connery was middling at best.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

I agree that Hopkins is a much stronger performer across a variety of roles and that he easily bests Connery's attempts at a role like Lecter
But, going on accent alone, we are looking at a mid-Atlantic accent with a Lithuanian lilt, I'm sure Sir Sean could pass for that

Perhaps, but I wonder if both Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer regret turning down Lambs.
It works just fine as it is, yet Demme apparently wanted Pfeiffer for Clarice but she didn't want to do it due to the dark subject matter. She then did a dark take on Catwoman a year later and gave one of her best performances.

She was a bit too much of a grown woman by then to be playing a rookie.
Jodie's about the same age, but she seemed younger.
