I think Gus' misconception of
Animal Farm
was meant to be a kind of inside joke, as you might expect somebody who owns a pet shop to not fully understand what George Orwell meant. Orwell was a Socialist (Fabian, not Labour), and the allegory was an indictment of the Bolshevik Revolution, something that would have been completely lost upon Gus.
