Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rush

They really blew it with the soundtrack on this picture. I know some Clapton fanboys will defend it, but deep down you all know just how badly it dates this otherwise decent movie. There's plenty of other movies from that came out at the start of the 90s that are still as fresh as ever, but Rush is not one of them, thanks to the awful soundtrack.
Music is supposed to enhance the tone of a picture, but playing obnoxiously loud, screeching electric guitar over an emotionally charged drug scene is really amateurish.
A lesson to take away from this. If you want an original soundtrack, use a professional movie score composer. Clapton may be great guitarist and song writer, but a movie score composer that does not make.

You have got to be kidding. The movie was released in 1991, but it's a period piece. It's 1974 Houston, Texas. It's supposed to sound dated.

Part of the problem is that the film takes place in 1974 when this was a popular sound, next to disco. I thought the film sucked in general, and the music was overdone in placesbut I think the film ruined the music more so.

The OP is right, even though this is supposed to take place in the mid 70's that solo guitar dates it as the late 80's early 90's. Think Lethal Weapons score. It was obnoxious at times. Should've stuck to my Hendrix

Not sure what you're talking about. They were playing very cool mid '70s (and earlier) music all through the film.

Sure it did. You go and make a better movie now. We'll wait here. Make some good music, too, while you're at it, boy.

Let's see Eric Clapton, Willie Dixon, Robin Trower, Patsy Cline, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan, Rick Derringer, Johnny Winter, the Ohio Players, Charlie Daniels Band, Bonnie Rait, Freddy Fender? They all suck right?
You likely don't even know who most of them are.
For a movie set in the mid 70's and in the South this soundtrack was on point which shows you didn't have a clue when you made your comment.
I've watched this movie a few times and it's one of my favorite movies - that deals with drug use along with Trainspotting & Drugstore Cowboy.
