Why does Christian Slater's character show no reaction to getting shot

Kevin Costner shoots Christian Slater through the hand with an arrow, and the arrow penetrates Slater's hand and is stuck there. Why doesn't Slater's character have any reaction of pain or otherwise at having been shot through the hand with an arrow?
