I believe that the writers felt that someone totally diferent from Marshall and Simon needed to be in the main cast.
Marshall was a regular kid who wanted to do the right thing and defend his family from the forces or weirdness.
Dash, on the other hand, had no one and no idea where he came from, and always thought more of himself. He even suggests in his debut episode that he's the "evil twin".
We don't know that much about him so we can only guess. An alien? A Frankenstein-like kid? That's what made him so interesting. Plus Jason Marsden did a great job.

Dash X is definitely an anomaly. He's the sketchy, off-kilter, slightly mentally deranged kid that every town has who just so happened to have a few run-ins with Marshall and Simon.
As for Dash being Marshall's evil twin I could see that. Just another spin the creators put on the show as a throwback to the b-movies of the 50's (many of which featured an "evil twin" as a twist or an ending) keeping in synch with all the other aspects of the show taken from the subgenre.

Yeah, he goes from the villain to the anti-hero and back to the villain. He's not your typical black-and-white character. In the first episode he appeared he reminded me of the Joker or Wolverine a little.

Does he remind anyone else of Christian Slater's character in Heathers, "Jason Dean" ? He could pass as a twisted version of JD

I loved this show as a kid and I was recently rewatching the series when I got to the first episode with him in it I came here to post about the exact same thing, Im glad Im not the only one who thought he was channeling Christian Slater.
