Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Navy Seals

Anything but a Seal. There's no way some hot shot kid who wants to cowboy his own way would be a Seal. Hellfrom the first mission shown he endangered the teamThen in the second mission his actions ended up getting another Seal killed.Yet they let him go on another mission where once again he played hot dog and disobeyed orders (Granted it was to save team leader, but that could have cost everyones life). Real Seals must have been very disappointed in this movie. After the recent deeath of so many from the elite Seal Team Six I hope they do come out with a movie that's much closer to reality, and with a much better script than this dog..There is a good documentary on History about Seal Team Six

You really have to take these sorts of movies with a grain of salt, because they are probably meant to be crowd-pleasing recruiting films, hence they glamorize non-conformist characters like the one Sheen played. I know they're cringeworthy, but I guess we just have to chalk it up to artistic license. Particularly bad was Richard Gere's characterization of a naval officer (albeit in training) in "An Officer and a Gentleman." Same deal: they glamorized a cowboy-like misfit and made it look like he was the real deal. No way in hell would a guy like that last in the actual Navy amongst all the strict protocol that real naval officers have to follow. But hey, it made for great recruiting!
BTW, minor nitpick here, but it should be Navy
      SEALs
not Navy Seals, as the term is an acronymn derived from the letters of
      SE
      a-
      A
      ir-
      L
      and
, which is where SEALs are trained to operate. Even IMDb has the title incorrectly listed as Navy Seals instead of Navy SEALs.

          Stallon from the rambo movies
Um, did you watch Rambo? He wasn't a hothead hotshot. Rambo was a broken, mostly silent warrior who felt betrayed by his country. In fact, his entire monologue in the cave from the first film is about just following orders he repeats a similar sentiment at the end of the first film.
The second and third film are also about Rambo just following orders, even when it mostly results in betrayal in the second film. The only time Rambo was "lone wolfing" it was in the fourth film where he was with a bunch of mercenaries.
          Agreed about Top Gun, though.

Even in the present time I wouldn't fully agree. Circa 1982 now I wouldn't agree at all. It is a misconception to think that all 'Naval Officers' follow a strict protocol to the 'T'. An Officer and a Gentlemen took several realities and cliches, expanded on them and packed them into one set piece. Nothing Mayo did was necessarily out of the ordinary for the time, some of it not for the present time. Selling ditties and services, nothing fiction there. A bad apple picked out by a Drill Instructor to drive examples, nothing fiction there. A guy knocking up a girl and killing himself because his creme dela creme will not like it, nothing fiction there.
Warmonger by day, poet by night!

the producers of the movie spelled it that way, so IMDB is getting it accurate. the person who signed off on naming the movie Navy Seals, as opposed to Navy SEALs is the one who made the mistake.
attempting to correct that mistake afterwards causes too many problems
