Its not about getting a 'free flag'. The flag is symbolic. For family of the fallen they want to share in the honor and have their piece. You don't have to believe in it but a lot of people do. Its ultimately important to them. Specifically for her, she wants the status of next of kin and to be honest there is nothing wrong with that. She has lost a lot and for her, it would be easier to cope if she was his wife rather than girlfriend.
