Another instance where having good actors doesn't redeem the movie, the problem here lies in the interpretation by the screenwriter & director. This American movie misses badly because it distorts the dark imaginative vision of the original. It unwisely lightens & sugarcoats Fay Weldon's darkly comic-fantasy book,
Life and Loves of a She Devil
& the 1986 British mini-series with the same title.
    She Devil
lacks the deeply disturbing & mordant black humour that courses through both book & mini-series, therefore it has no bite, it's just a conventional US film comedy. Americans really do not get irony.

I never saw the miniseries but I read the book, this movie's better. It's better that Ruth become her OWN person, her OWN persona and make it in the world than to spend so much grueling time and agony becoming the person she hates most, AND that she considers her children's wellbeing as being with HER and not raised by other people once she has her life together.

Yes! I wish they would air the British version of it more often, as I find it superior in every way to the American version. It followed the book more truly, and was dark and mysterious, intriguing. The American version is just embarrassing to watch, to me. Even Meryl Streep cannot redeem it. You are rightit has no "bite".

            Americans get irony; Hollywood doesn't!
