I realize free agency didn't become the circus show it is today, but did teams really have that few of players under multi-year contracts so that they could just change 90% of the roster every spring?

why not, the LA Clippers do it every few years. jettison or trade any player that would cost them money.
in fact, the pittsburg pirates are doing it as we speak. in fact, the washington nationals are probably the closest to the Major League Movie Indians. try and convince me that mess was assembled on purpose LOL

Well, some of the players were coming back. Remember that Doran was still on the team because of contracts "The only thing about Doran is that he is high priced." Also, you get the feeling that eddie harris was returning.

          A. They're not "scabs." There is no indication that they did not join the union.
          B. This is an unsuccessful team with little money to spend. Dorn and possibly Harris were under contract. Apparently Dorn cost them so much they didn't have enough for anyone with talent.
          C. Rachel Phelps wanted the team to lose. Why would she spend big bucks buying expensive player contracts?

As far as I know, in Major League Baseball, there are no scabs. Once you sign a conract, you are automaically a member of the Major Lague Basball Player's Association. Players like Jake, who was an invitee, should have aleady been a memeber, because he playd MLB Ball in the past. Rookies like Willie Mays-Hayes and Rick Vaughn were probably not members yet, but once they made the team, they would have signed a conract and becacame members.
The closest to scabs in the MLB was during the lockout of 2004-05, when the eaems tried to go with eplacement players during spring raining, but once the collective bzgining agreemnt was reached, teams dopped them immediately.
At the start of the 2005 season, if there was no agreement and the replacement players played, once the CBA was reached, I'm sure those replacement players would be barred from joining the Player's Association for being a scab.

I think the OP confused the term scrub with scab.

Yes, I'm pretty sure teams in the past did have alot of scrubs (look at the Seattle Mariners during the time Major League came out), but it's only a movie though.
Plus in 1989, The Indians were still struggling which is by that point of thirty four seasons and finally got out their funk in 1995 with a 100+ win season and a trip to the World Series (they went again in 1997).

Florida Marlins did it the year after they won the world series, in 1997. Next year they won 50-something games.

The Marlins owner really did unload almost all the players with big contracts after winning the World Series. I heard having too many players with big contracts makes a baseball franchise difficult to sell. But wouldn't prospective owners want a team with some talented players?

Yes, but not if they have huge salaries. That's even more money out of their pocket at the onset of ownership.

One thing I found funny is apparently none of these players had agents. Vaughn was called while incarcerated. Taylor was called while in Mexico. Hayes just shows up. That said, I'm guessing a few of the players were returning players. Phelps probably got rid of their high priced talent, if any but kept Dorn probably because no one wanted him. Also, I hate to keep on invoking the 1993 Phillies but they pretty much did the same thing bringing in players like Larry Anderson, Pete Incaviglia, Jim Eisenreich, Milt Thompson(2nd Phillies stint), Todd Pratt, Danny Jackson, etc. These were decent players but not great players they brought in. Just so happens the entire team had career years.
