The one complaint I have about the movie (and, I saw it when it first came out in the theater) is that the movie is dark. When they are underwater the colors are vibrant, but out of the sea they are shadowed and dark. I don't know if this was deliberate, but the scene of Ariel when she becomes human and is walking out of the water is too dark also.

Despite being considered the beginning of the Renaissance period, this is still very much an 80s Disney film. Personally I love that darker look and it works quite well here. This film to me wasn't so much a beginning as much as it was the end of a grand artistic era of animation. Now Disney overall wasn't a key part of that, most of their 80s films are bad, but they still gave it an amazing final chapter.
