This is one of the few Madonna movies I've seen where I actually forgot that I was watching Madonna and was able to get into the character she was playing. I don't know if it was because she altered her speaking voice or if it was because the movie itself was so silly in nature that it sort of distracted from her star, but this is one of her more agile acting performancesnext to
Evita,
Desperately Seeking Susan
and
A League of their Own
(and even with those movies, I was always sort of conscious of the fact it it was
her
on screen.) Here I got into the cheesy story and went with it.
Madonna missed her calling. Seems like she always wanted to be considered a "serious" actress and probably leveraged her "name" to get roles that she was ill-suited to play or had vanity pieces written for her that weren't any good. She does much better with quirky/slapstick/screwball comedic material.
