Seeing his brother being killed by the cop and years of both him and Billy being abused by the nuns drove him crazy hell if I was abused by nuns and saw a family member getting killed like that I would go nuts myself.

In the original Ricky was simply a normal, nice young boy. I think the exact moment something inside him snapped was when he watched
his brother get gunned down. There was also the dead priest, but Billy was likely the tipping point. He was just able to control his killer instincts, "punishing" only on rare occasions throughout the years, until he finally lost it, killing his girlfriend, her ex-boyfriend, and starting that "Garbage Day" rampage.
It never seemed to dawn on Ricky to kill Mother Superior until after he escaped the police station
