Nicknames, along with buzz haircuts and dull green uniforms, weaken the recruits' civilian identities and open the way to a new, military identity.
Nicknames were not especially common when I was in the army (early 70s). Maybe films such as FMJ and Top Gun caused young people to think they were the norm and make them eager to adopt them.
