In the 80's I saw The Boys in Company C,a film from 1977,dir.Sidney J. Furie.
It's a Vietnamfilm.
R.Lee Ermey is in it,as a sergeant.I wonder if Kubrick saw him in it.
It was one of the first Vietnamfilms.
And there are similar scenes to FMJ,like the shaving of the boys heads. The bootcamp.
Never happened to me before, watching a Kubick film thinking I've seen this before(some scenes, they are different films as a whole)
There's also a scene where a soldier,played by a great Stan Shaw,steps on a mine and can't move or he'll die.
Powerful scene,in the rice fields, never forgot it.
That also happened later in the much praised warfilm No Man's Land(2001).Dir. Danis Tanovi(Bosnian language).
That scene was what everybody was talking about.
I was just thinking, this has been done before, way before. -

ermy's performance in boys had nothing to do with this movie, although it seems like it should have. the helicopter gunner was originally the drill sergeant. he was then dropped when ermy had sent a video showing how the actor should do it; ermy was cast as a tech advisor. kubrick realized how brilliant and real ermy was and cast him, and gave the other guy the helicopter cameo.
the boys in company c, in my opinion, is a far better movie. more realistic and less of an anti-war slogan on film. ermy is tough in that movie but he also was preparing the boys for war. in this he's just one-dimensional and seems to want them dead.
what C and Metal have in common is that in both movies, Ermy took over the role as sergeant. in Company C, the Mexican actor plays the first drill sergeant in the first scene where he calls the hippie "Jesus," and then ermy took over, giving that initial actor a few scenes.
