Yes. It's Gusthav Mahler's symphony number 5, Adagietto. My apologies if the spelling is incorrect. That haunting piece of music was used in the film STALINGRAD as well. Take care 🙂
p.s. the music at the start in the cinema scene is Liebestraum by Franz Liszt.

Correction.. main theme throughout the film was from Franz Listz: Les Preludes.

I believe that a selection from Mahler's 1st symphony is played at some point in the film. I have not seen Stalingrad (mentioned in earlier post) but the Adagietto from the Mahler 5th is not in Tampopo, though it does have a prominent place in Visconti's Death in Venice.

Yes, the second theme from the first movement of Mahler's first symphony is played throughout.

I'm not sure why folk are saying "Adagietto" from Mahler's 5th Symphony isn't in this when it is played in the scenes with Koji Yakusho's character. I have just watched his final scene again to make sure.
Some versions I have found online are here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1l1VGhFFYs
              and:
              http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2q5a0_music
It is probably Mahler's most famous and iconic piece!
