During the final battle, was he planning on killing him?
I think not, since he could have just shot him while Barnes was fighting the VC soldier. He just grabbed him by the shoulder. I think he was actually trying to pull him back to safety and after Barnes tried to kill him he just decided "F* this" and killed him.

I think he was trying to warn him that snake and nape was going to be dropped on their position and to get in his foxhole.
