There were a lot of good actors in "Platoon", but only Depp, Dafoe, and Sheen got close to super stardom. McGinley, Whitaker, Quinn, Moses, Dillon, and Berenger have had decent careers, but most of the others didn't get that break. Stone spoke at length about in the behind-the-scenes interview and he felt it was a shame that not everybody got that chance.

"My best guess is he wasn't versatile".
My best guess is that he was never given the opportunity to act in a different type of role. The vast majority of actors take the roles they can get, regardless of their ability. It wouldn't surprise me if he got fed up with Hollywood's biased casting and left acting. (I'm certainly fed up of seeing the way black characters are still written in films).
"All other roles I saw him in such as The Principal and that Beau Bridges B-movie, he was a nasty, violent thug, even worse than this movie"
I haven't seen him in any other film, so cannot comment on them. I have seen him in Platoon and he certainly wasn't violent in it! You must be confusing him with the nasty, violent thug who beat a one-legged man to death. Or perhaps you're confusing him with the nasty, violent, racist thug who shot a grandmother in front of her family and later shot his brother-in-arms to save his own skin.
If he WAS a violent thug in the films you've seen, it was because his character was WRITTEN that way and he was DIRECTED to act like that, since that is how acting works.
If an actor always plays the hero, does that mean they lack versatility too?
Maybe you could explain why you think Reggie Johnson, as an actor, isn't versatile?
