Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Mission

One of the main characters would have been a Native as well, as an Indian Jesuit who spoke english? I noticed there was one, but he wasn't a main character, and most of the scenes were devoted between the white jesuits, Mendoza and Gabriel. I felt it would have been appropriate to include an Indian Jesuit (if that's possible) who spoke spoke english and was able to convey his peoples struggle, as our lack of proper connection with the native's plight was a slight flaw in this film. Some more scenes could have been devoted to this, as I felt this was where the film lacked.
Or maybe, even, the movie could have focused on a Native being the main character, with the bulk of the film concentrating on his relationship between the Europeans and his own people. But if the film went like that, then Mendoza's character would most likely be scrapped, and my favorite part of the film was his redemption in the beginning.
However, despite these factors, The Mission is still one of my favorite films.
"But why is the rum gone?!"

umthere were no Indian Jesuits in Paraguay. With all the laughable historical inaccuracies, why promote yet another?
I also enjoyed the conversation between the king and Altamirano, but in reality the Guaranis did not convert so quickly to Christianity if at all. They would not have understood the Christian god's will nor would they have questioned god's will in building a mission then abandoning it. Their deities were pretty wishy washy and changed their minds regularly.
The people you idolize wouldn't like you.
