Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Invaders from Mars

To me this film to me has all the hallmarks of a Speilberg or Joe Dante movie. It has a small town vibe, a child's perspective story and it has that late 70s early 80s 'feel' to it which films like E.T. or Close Encounters had.
The only difference is that the acting is pretty bad but this isn't Shakespeare at the old vic, it's a cheesy remake of a very old and dated (but still good) sci-fi film and so I think one has to reel in their expectations a little.
The monsters are a bit guff but the actual space ship design is really cool and I like the swirling sand effect plus there are some genuinely tense moments here and there.
I saw it in the cinema when I was 8 and it did scare me a little but even now it's a well put together film for it's genre.
I think fans of the original should maybe stop bleating on about how the first one was a masterpiece becasue it wasn't. Classic yes, masterpiece no. There is a difference.

I agree. Tobe Hooper was a fan of the original, and I think that shows in his respectful remake. I love Invaders From Mars, even if some aspects of it don't hold up too well. The original is good and I won't try to argue that fact, but I personally have more fun with this remake!

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
