A throw-away script written by John Carpenter. If he had any confidence in it he would have made the movie himself. It has some similarities to two other movies, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and Big Trouble in Little China. The same guy, W. D. Richter, wrote those, John Carpenter directed the latter. This script was written earlier than either of the two. Did he (Richter) get a look at it, maybe while working on an adaptation of The Ninja?
In 1981, he wrote a screenplay based on Eric Van Lustbader's novel The Ninja for Irvin Kershner to direct…
Irvin Kershner was hired to direct, using a screenplay written by W.D. Richter, which followed the novel very closely. Tom Cole was hired to write a draft, while Kershner himself also wrote a draft. Lustbader's choice for portraying Nicholas Linnear was Richard Gere, but it never got to that point. Kershner was later replaced by John Carpenter as new director. Carpenter co-wrote a second draft with Tommy Lee Wallace in 1983. Carpenter left the project after a year, as the project still had no workable script draft.
    The similarities:
    Rocket car
Car stolen and held inside a building
Sneaking into a building (entering through sewer) to get the car
Pretty weak when I see it listed out. I could have added rescuing a woman trapped in the building but that doesn't seem unique enough.
The setup of this movie is: man steals cassette for the FBI with evidence against a company in Las Vegas, some guys have built and test a rocket car, man hides cassette in rocket car, woman steals rocket car. It sounds like it should be a much more exciting movie but it is bland and boring.
It does get added to the list though:
