Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge

No cheesy one liners, no care or sympathy. Regardless if this was a good movie or not, this is the Freddy Wes Craven envisioned from the beginning. Dark and mean in tone and hell bent on achieving his goals. They never captured the Freddy of this movie in any of the other ones.

Ehh. What other Nightmare movie had "care or sympathy?"

Oh really? Is that why Wes Craven was always the MOST critical of THIS film (and the way Freddy was portrayed) over all the others? He made no secret of how wrong he thought they got everything.
They never captured the Freddy of this movie in any of the other ones.
You can say that again. After the way this was critically panned, they went out of their way to not make the same mistakes again. That's why Dream Warriors is hailed as the real sequel to the original, with the rest of the serious following the continuity of parts 1 & 3, while virtually ignoring almost everything about 2.

Craven didn't like the way the movie was written with it breaking certain rules and boundaries but did not dislike the way Freddy was portrayed. This is Freddy at his darkest, meanest, most sadistic and most serious, it also includes the best make-up along with Englund's amazingly sinister performance. Englund hammed it up big time after this starting with the overrated, awful dream warriors.
