no it doesn't, nothing needs a blu ray release. its the same damn thing, humans can't see the difference between such stupidly small levels of detail. hard copies of things are defunct anyway, why bring out a new format when everything is turning digital anyway? in 10 years nobody will buy hard copies of things. not that i like that. i like hard copies. especially tapes. and old movies are meant to be watched on tape. i got ladyhawke on tape deliberately, the sound is terrible, it's great. beep digital.

        720 * 480 (DVD) versus 1920 * 1080 (HD) =
        6 times more detail!
Only people with heavy viewing problems or crappy equipment won't see the difference.
hard copies of things are defunct anyway, why bring out a new format when everything is turning digital anyway?
??? Since when is DVD or Blu Ray analogue?
in 10 years nobody will buy hard copies of things.
        Sure, like bananas, apples, cakes
not that i like that. i like hard copies. especially tapes. and old movies are meant to be watched on tape.
        Wuhahahah! LOL
Movies are meant to be watched
        IN CINEMAS
        . On
        FILM
. A format, which has even more resolution than HD. But not crappy VHS tapes.
Or did you mean this kind of tape?

i got ladyhawke on tape deliberately, the sound is terrible, it's great. beep digital.
        People deliberately watching
        VHS tapes
are retarded anyway. Or just short on money. 😉

You know what he means. He's not talking analog vs digital, he's talking media vs. media-less.
It will take a long time before movies are no longer released on some form of media. Eventually, the every video ever made will be available for pay-per-view and no one will require a media library at home.

            Are you mad?
For playback, there is no advantage to VHS over DVD. Nothing is meant to be done one way or another - adapt you damn Luddite! I watch NOTHING on VHS even though I was raised watching films on cassette. I've re-collected them on DVD. Being done with the damn tracking problems alone is worth it.
As for the whole digital file format of movies: yes, films are tending to be released that way but physical media will continue to be produced for much more than ten years. The rest of the world is not evolving quite as quickly as the USA and the West.

That would be nice but I wonder if theres a good enough quality print from which to make the HD master?

Best case scenario they'd scan the OCN. Other than that they can use the IN or the IP. It's not like they are using old worn prints that have been used in movie theaters.
Blu-ray is being issued by Fox in Japan on April 22, Hong Kong release as well. The US release shouldn't be too far off.

By OCN do you mean the original negatives? That would be best case scenario for sure.

It's great to hear that a US Blu-ray could be released. I wonder why Fox didn't announce it's release in the US first. I haven't seen this film for a long time so I plan to watch it today on DVD to determine if it is worth the upgrade.
OK, I've finally watched the DVD but it isn't anamorphic. I've already ordered the Blu-ray on May 1, 2015 along with Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring on Blu-ray. I think it came out on April 15, 2015.

Because Fox doesn't have the rights in the US, that would be Warner instead.

When they do I hope Warner does a fresh new scan. I was a bit dissapointed with the old transfer used for the Fox blu-ray.

Well, there is by now. Released May 2011.
                                    I just watched a 1080p release.
Quality is good for a movie of this age. Seen better though (Blade Runner is woah).
