Navarre's SWORD . . .

Navarre (Rutger Hauer) is told that his family sword was lost while crossing the river in the night. Later in the picture, Philipe (Matthew Broderick) removes a sword from underneath a carriage and provides it to Navarre in the cathedral to confront the bishop. The sword appears to be Navarre's five generational sword.
I think the film's narrative on the sword was vague, unless I missed something somewhere. Is that the family sword at the end of "Ladyhawke" (1985)? Had it been lost than recovered? Was it ever lost at all? Did Philipe lie to Navarre and actually have the family sword the whole time? Thoughts?
Thanks,

Yeah, I agree. I thought this was totally clear in the film. Philippe and Imperius hid the sword because Navarre had intended to use the sword to fulfill his family quest by killing the Bishop - and Philippe and Imperious thought if they hid the sword they might be able to talk some sense into him.
I got this the first time I saw the movie and I was about 6. It wasn't confusing in the slightest.
