How did the soldiers get so split up at the end?

As cool as it was seeing the soldiers get killed by the zombie horde, I was utterly confused by those scenes.
We see the elevator come down with all the zombies on it. Okay. Everyone runs and Rhodes drives off without his men, who are forced to make it back to safety on food. So far, so good.
But then a few scenes later, we see these soldiers split up, running around in all directions and eventually gets attacked by the zombies.
Steel seems to be the only one running straight for the base. But what the hell were the others doing? Torrez tried to. hide?
I am not even sure what the heck Rickles were doing, or how he managed to get swarmed so quickly. I mean, sure, there were a few zombies coming out of the cave.
But there is no way the horde from the elevator would have reached him that quickly.
Any thoughts on what the heck was going on? -

Movie magic and some minor time jumping.
The cave barricade was left open by John, Rhodes woke up and went to the elevator in the cart - so during this time getting there, zombies were coming through via the cave.
Rhodes isn't
that
hampered as he returns to the base quickly from the elevator, but the others who are on foot, now have the zombies behind them from the lift and quickly discover the zombies are also in front of them (and a lot more advanced than they were for Rhodes) and panic ensues - they weren't the sharpest tools in the box either which probably didn't help in that moment of panic
